Huia Masters Swimming Club is based in
the Hutt Valley, adjacent to New Zealand's capital city,
Wellington.
It is affiliated to the National body "New Zealand Masters
Swimming Inc" (NZMS) - see www.nzmastersswimming.org.nz
Where? - Huia Pool, Huia Street, Lower Hutt When? - Sunday evenings. 6pm - 7pm
You need not be a 'gun' swimmer - in fact many of our members are of very average ability. We just enjoy the chance for a casual swim and socialising at the end of the pool! However as part of the national body, those of a competive nature (or just a desire for some fun) can participate in local, national and international Masters swimming events.
Membership of the club (and NZMS) is open to all people who turn 20 in their first year of membership.
"Try Before You Buy" - come along for a few Sunday nights (at no cost), and see if you like the experience. After this initial period, we would like you to join and become a regular swimmer.
The club fee of $110 gives you a swim every Sunday night for the year, as well as a spa afterwards. Included in the fee is the "National Masters Swimming" fee of $40.
Every Sunday night 6pm - 7pm.
Club nights are relatively unstructured. Most people tend to do their own swim program. Feel free to join in with others on what they are doing. The following are some tips about how we operate:
- Join any lane where the swimmers appear to be about your own pace
- Swim clockwise, keeping to the left of the lane
- Try to use kickboards and pull buoys when others in the lane are using them
If you have any questions or want advice about swimming, any member will be willing to advise you or direct you to someone who can assist.
Following your swim, enjoy a soak in the hot spa!
Many of our members enjoy participating in swimming meets. The emphasis here is not on straight performance, but on personal achievement. Events are organised and results collated by sex and age group. Many events also include an organised social as well. See the NZMS web site (www.nzmastersswimming.org.nz) for information of upcoming meets.
These events allow you to compete from you own pool! Results are recorded at a club night and posted to the organising club who collate the results and award prizes and certificates. See the NZMS web site (www.nzmastersswimming.org.nz) for further information.
The Web Relay is the postal meet organised by Huia Masters. Teams of four swim for 15 minutes. The distances swam are handicapped and prizes awarded. More details here.
Throughout the year we organise a few social events such as a supper after the swim, or a restaurant meal or barbarque.
Towards the end of the year we run the Tin-Man club swim. You must complete a sequence of bizarre water related activities for your chance to win the much sought after Tin-Man, and the privilege of organising the event the following year!
